Our goal is to create spaces, which provide ideal conditions for living and working, while using the minimum amount of resources necessary and achieving exceptional architectural and spatial quality and high energy performance over the whole life cycle. We develop a unique energy design concept for each individual project, pulling together strategies for building form, envelope, climate control and energy supply systems into an integrated total energy concept.
We provide this unique and specialized service on challenging and complex projects worldwide and select the projects we work on very carefully. We choose to work on projects on which we feel we can make a contribution to the development of future orientated building design.
On account of the fact that we provide a very focused specialized design service we are able at any one time to work on a significant number of some of the best projects in the world while maintaining a lean company structure. An overarching maxim of the company philosophy is the personal involvement of the principal in all aspects of the design and technical work carried out and in all dialogue with the client and design team.
Energy Design Cody provides energy design consulting services on projects in countries all over the world, currently in Austria, Azerbaijan, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany and South Korea. We are currently working on a diverse range of projects including the following typologies: office buildings, university building and campus projects, residential buildings, hotel buildings, skyscrapers and urban design projects.
First prize-winning collaborations in architectural competitions in recent years include:
- Walkerhill
- Gateway Gardens, Frankfurt with Coop Himmelb(l)au (2014)
- Gate 2 Tower, Vienna with MVRDV (2014)
- Adidas Offices South East, Herzogenaurach with DMAA (2014)
- Sky Wing Tower, Manhattan, NYC with Coop Himmelb(l)au (2013)
- Business Center Tower, Vienna with JSWD/ BEHF (2013)
- Ecole Centrale Paris, France with OMA (2012)
- Parliamentary Building of Albania with Coop Himmelb(l)au (2011)
- Fudan University, Shanghai with Miralles Tagliabue (2011)
- Bank Austria Campus, Vienna with Atelier Boris Podrecca (2011)
The overarching goals are to maximize building energy performance and create buildings which are capable of meeting the challenges of the future. Our experience on projects in many different parts of the world has clearly shown that a focused strategic input during the early design phases can have a significant impact, as it is at this stage that all major design decisions are made which in turn determine to a large extent the buildings energy performance and its sustainability.
We carefully choose the consulting services provided for each project with the aim of achieving a high level of building performance and sustainability and the following social, economic and ecological aims:
- optimized internal environmental conditions
- reduced life cycle costs
- reduced CO2 emissions and building ecological footprint
The consulting services in the scope of work Energy Design can be seen to be complementary to the design services of the traditional scopes of work provided by building physics, MEP and facade consultants and are being increasingly commissioned on modern construction projects on account of the increased complexity and requirements of energy efficient design. The work carried out is not intended in any way to replace the normal consulting work to be carried out by the project MEP, building physics and facade consultants, but is to be understood as an augmentation of the normal design team expertise with advice on energy efficient design aspects. The emphasis is placed on taking an overview and giving impulses which can be taken up by the project team in the development of an overall energy concept.
In energy design the scientific principles of thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics are used to develop solutions which utilize multifunctional building elements and systems to achieve high overall building performance. The discipline of energy design requires a synthesis of creative design talent and precise analytical skills. Mathematical models and dynamic simulations are used to assess and verify the feasibility of the proposed concepts and to optimize and validate the design solutions. The implementation of technology in design can often lead to a lower requirement for technical systems in the completed building.
The core philosophy underpinning all design work we undertake is whole systems thinking and a holistic design approach. Particular emphasis is placed throughout on the development of an integrated approach to building and climate control system design, employing synergetic effects in a symbiotic relationship between architecture and engineering to maximize both spatial and building performance qualities. We develop ideas and concepts, carry out analysis and present the findings in reports with clear and concise diagrams and explanatory texts. We outline the pros and cons of alternative solutions and approaches and prepare documents with the aim of supporting and enabling informed decisions to be made by the client. We are accustomed to working in an integrated design process environment.
Our consulting work is usually undertaken during the concept, schematic design and design development phases. In collaboration with the client, architects and the other design team members we develop an Integrated Building Skin, Climate Control and Energy Concept for the project. We present our work in progress at regular intervals during the design process, outlining the various alternative approaches being followed and we integrate feedback from the client into the design and the further development of the alternative solutions.
The aim of our design work and collaboration is to contribute to a project, which not only excels in terms of its energy performance (high comfort, low energy demand) but also in urban design, architectural, spatial and functional terms. We seek to help create beautiful high performance environments. One necessary condition to enable us achieve these aims is an open minded interdisciplinary approach to the design process on the part of all participants, but particularly on the part of the project architects.
